Consumer Units and Fuse Boards

A consumer unit or fuse board installation serves the same purpose and safely distributes electricity through the circuits to provide power. Should the power overload a circuit, the consumer unit or fuse box shuts down, or “trips”, the power supply through a circuit breaker. Usually, it is possible to restore power by flicking a switch in a consumer unit back to an “ON” position, but frequent tripping could be indicative of a problem and the need for a replacement.

With fuse boxes, a wire will melt if the circuit overloads. These wires can be a little difficult to replace for some home and business owners.

It is best to think of a consumer unit as a safer and more modern version of a fuse box installation. Many older fuse boxes won’t comply with the current UK Building Regulations or the latest version of the IET Wiring Regulations. If you have a troublesome fuse box and need a dependable electrician to replace it with a consumer unit, please call Eden Electrical Contractors Ltd for help.

Recognising Consumer Units and Fuse Boards

  • A fuse box installation is identifiable through a sequence of fuses in the fuse carrier which can be manually removed to replace melted wire.
  • A consumer unit installation has mini circuit breakers and switches fitted in rows. The breakers flip switches to an “OFF” position if overloaded.

Consumer Unit Types

Bringing a property back up to code is a priority for our electricians so, if your home or business in Brighton, Hassocks, Haywards Heath, Hove, Worthing or the surrounding area currently has a fuse box installation, we recommend a consumer unit as a replacement. There are three different consumer units we can install based on your needs and the type of property in question.

These include:

Main Switch Consumer Units

A main switch consumer unit has a main switch and toggles for the individual circuits. During a power surge, the main switch triggers to an “OFF” position, as will the toggle for the circuit that has caused the overload.

This is an ideal choice for single-storey properties and flats.

Dual RCD Consumer Units

A dual RCD consumer unit splits the power load over the RCD1 and the RCD2 circuits. This type of installation alternates the circuits, meaning that electricity will still be available in other parts of the property after a power surge.

This is an ideal choice for properties with multiple storeys.

High-Integrity Consumer Units

A high-integrity consumer unit separates the circuits independently and this is why they have grown in popularity over time. If, for example, the circuit for a freezer overloads, all other circuits will continue working normally.

This is an ideal choice for properties with 12 circuits or more.

If a fuse board installation or consumer unit trips on a constant basis, it is best to call in an electrician to test the system at the earliest opportunity. Should we find that your current installation is in need of an upgrade or replacement and you would like to move forward with using our electricians, swapping out from old to new will usually take just one day but we advise that turnarounds can vary based on the property’s size and the condition of the wiring.

We can visit properties in all Brighton, Hassocks, Haywards Heath, Hove and Worthing areas, and anywhere else in Sussex, to undertake a survey.
